Animal Farm vs. Marxism Essay Example For Students
Animal Farm vs. Marxism Essay Characters, items, and events found in George Orwells book, Animal Farm, can be compared to similar characters, items, and events found in Marxism and the 1917 Russian Revolution. This comparison will be shown by using the symbolism that is in the book with similarities found in the Russian Revolution. Old Major was a prized-boar that belonged to Farmer Jones. The fact that Old Major is himself a boar was to signify that radical change and revolution are, themselves, boring in the eyes of the proletariat represented by the other barnyard animals, who are more prone to worrying about work and survival in their everyday life. Old Major gave many speeches to the farm animals about hope and the future. He is the main animal who got the rebellion started even though he died before it actually began. Old Majors role compares to Lenin and Marx whose ideas were to lead to the communist revolution. Animal Farm is a criticism of Karl Marx, as well as a novel perpetuating his convictions of democratic Socialism. Zwerdling, 20. Lenin became leader and teacher of the working class in Russia, and their determination to struggle against capitalism. Like Old Major, Lenin and Marx wrote essays and gave speeches to the working class poor. The working class in Russia, as compared with the barnyard animals in Animal Farm, were a laboring class of people that received low wages for their work. Like the animals in the farm yard, the people is Russia thought there would be no oppression in a new society because the working class people or animals would own all the riches and hold all the power. Golubeva and Gellerstein 168. Another character represented in the book is Farmer Jones. He represents the symbol of the Czar Nicholas in Russia who treated his people like Farmer Jones treated his animals. The animal rebellion on the farm was started because Farmer Jones was a drunk who never took care of the animals and who came home one night, left the gate open and the animals rebelled. Czar Nicholas was a very weak man who treated his people similar to how Farmer Jones treated his animals. The Czar made his working class people very mad with the way he wielded his authority and preached all the time, and the people suffered and finally demanded reform by rebelling. The Czar said The law will henceforward be respected and obeyed not only by the nation but also the authority that rules it and that the law would stand above the changing views of the individual instruments of the supreme power. Pares 420. The animal Napoleon can be compared as a character representing Stalin in Russia. Both were very mean looking, didnt talk very much but always got what they wanted through force. In one part of the book Napoleon charged the dogs on Snowball, another animal. Stalin became the Soviet Leader after the death of Lenin. He was underestimated by his opponents who always became hisà victims, and he had one of the most ruthless, regimes in history. In was not till very many years later that the world found out about the many deaths that Stalin created in Russia during the Revolution. For almost 50 years the world thought that the Nazis had done the killing in Russia, when in fact it was Stalin. Imse 2. The last characters that are symbolic of each other are the animal Snowball with the Russian leader Trotsky. Snowball was very enthusiastic and was a leader who organized the defense of the farm. He gave speeches and instructions but was not very beneficial. All the other animals liked him, but he was outsmarted by Napoleon. .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 , .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .postImageUrl , .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 , .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:hover , .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:visited , .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:active { border:0!important; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:active , .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2 .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0e9b3593bd8d045c231505f4339062f2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: When the painting "Family Picture" by Max Beckmann was chosen as the book cover for The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, one can argue that the selection was adequate EssayTrotsky and Stalins relationship was very much like Snowballs and Napoleons. Trotsky organized the Red Army and gave speeches and everyone in Russia thought he would win power over Stalin. After Lenins death Trotsky lost all his power to Stalin and was expelled from the communist party. He was at one time considered the second most powerful man in Russia. Trotsky Comptons 290. Besides characters there are many items that can be compared as symbols in the book and in Russia. The whip that Napoleon used in the farmyard to wield power can be compared to the power that Stalin used on the Russians. Napoleon carried a whip in his trotter. Stalin used his power to starve the Russian people and to have Lenin arrested. Stalins main goal was to maximize his personal power. Stalin, Britannia 576. Stalin whipped his people into shape by collectivizing agriculture, by police terror, and by destroying remnants of individual prosperity. He also led the Soviet Union into the nuclear age Clarkson 442. Propaganda is another item that was used in the Russian revolution. It can be compared to Squealer in Animal Farm. Squealer brainwashed a form of propaganda the barnyard animals into believing that they did not like apples and milk, while he and Napoleon were stealing the food for themselves. In Russia, the Bolsheviks carried out propaganda on the people by passing out leaflets and putting stories in the newspapers that were not true. They told workers, soldiers, and peasants to not trust their own hands and to take away land from the landowners. Golubeva and Gellerstein 80. Another item that is similar in both Animal Farm and Russia are the dogs and the secret police. Napoleon trained his dogs when they were puppies to guard him and to obey his every command. They chased Snowball away. Stalin trained his secret police to do his bidding whenever he issued an order. Stalin had his secret police kill between 60,000 to 70,000 people. These police were called the Checka and the graves filled with bodies stacked upon each other with bullets in each skull were found many years later. Imse, C2. Another symbolism that exists in the book and in Russia is a similarity to events that took place. The windmill that is present in Animal Farm canà be compared with the growth of industry in Russia or the Industrial Revolution. Snowball first introduced the windmill concept to the farm but Napoleon disagreed with him and had the dogs chase him away. Napoleon then presented the windmill as a good idea and the animals were presented with hope that things would get better on the farm. When it blew down, Napoleon blamed it on Snowball. Napoleon thought that if he could keep the barnyard animals busy all the time replacing the windmill that they would not realize how bad their living conditions were, and he could blame the destruction all the time on Snowball. The windmill is the only thing that was holding the animals together as a unit. In Russia the growth of factory and industry was very depressing but depended on the obligatory labor of serfs. Russia hoped that by keeping the serfs working all the time and promising them a better world that they would not realize how bad their living conditions were. The Industrialists were pressing their own constitutional demands. Clarkson 352. None of the social classes were fighting each other because there were no classes left. What Russia got working was to make the people think that the prospect of loss of potential improvements in conditions of life of the here and now, could only be attained by stimulating labor to unprecedented efforts. .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 , .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .postImageUrl , .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 , .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:hover , .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:visited , .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:active { border:0!important; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:active , .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7 .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u26991c39a944e2b0f19c9fdae5af67a7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde EssayThe last event that was similar in the book and in Russia was the animal rebellion on the farm and the Russian Revolution of 1917. Farmer Jones was drunk a lot and would forget to feed the animals on the farm. The withholding of this food is what finally forced the animals on the farm to rebel against Farmer Jones. In Russia, there were many food shortages which caused the people to demonstrate and then the Russian soldiers refused to suppress them and the leaders demanded that Nicholas transfer his power to parliamentary government because everything was getting out of control. Soviet workers and soldiers formed a special committee and establish ed a government. The same day the emperor abdicated. Russian Revolution, Grolier npa. This actually backfired in Russia and the war continued and the people still starved. Many lessons can be learned by reading Animal Farm that can help countries and governments around the world from making mistakes in wielding their power against their people. If a population is suppressed and not allowed to accumulate things for themselves then an overthrow of the government that is suppressing them will be the result.

My life in 20 years free essay sample
Though this period of twenty years is negligibly small on the evolutionary time scale, it is, when considered in terms of mans span of life, a considerably long period. My friends frown upon my pessimistic attitude so I shall be optimistic when I think of what life has in store for me. Where will I be in 20 years? Well, if everything remains equal, I would be comfortably off and be pleasantly burdened with responsibilities. I shall have some material comforts and live a happy life. I will probably have a house of my own. I wonder what kind of magnificent television sets we will have then. There will be a whole lot of channels to choose from. If the satellite system is perfected, we shall be able to view television programs from all over the world. I love music. I expect in 20 years, the degree of fidelity in electronic sound reproduction to be so high that I can actually listen to great, realistic concerts in my own room. We will write a custom essay sample on My life in 20 years or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page At the rate we are miniaturizing electronic contraptions; I expect my entire sound system to be the size of a match box. My telephone will have that gadget that will enable me to see the person I am talking to. I wonder if domestic lighting will be the same. I can safely predict that my kitchen will probably look like some high-class science laboratory. There will be numerous labour-saving devices that will ease our domestic burden. I feel so many changes will occur. I wonder what my car will look like. How will my personal life change? I feel my physical energy would be very much diminished and 1 would have retired from football. I hope to be a veteran croquet player, playing doubles at least twice a week. I will most definitely not take to golf, even if I have the opportunity. I could be mentally restless and I would have developed a few hobbies and cactus-growing will be one of them. I would be inviting friends to play croquet with me on Sundays and we would he absorbed in the game, unaware of the world around. Not only will my leisure life change, but my working life as well. Now I find myself wildly ecstatic and enthusiastic about everything I do and I have made great plans for the future. I have variously decided to become a pilot, a journalist, an officer, a teacher and a doctor. I wonder how many of my dreams will be realized. In twenty years, I shall be thirty six. At the age of thirty six, I would have chosen one occupation and stuck to it. At the moment, the prospect of a routine life terrifies me. However at thirty six, any other way of living would be difficult. Perhaps I would have finally decided to become a teacher. If I would emulate my teachers, especially Mrs Coulter, I should be dedicated and efficient, preparing my lessons thoroughly and teaching effectively. I would be conscious of the teachers responsibility for the mental, physical and moral development of the pupils. I would be the croquet master of the school. If I were to be a successful teacher, I would eschew the idea of becoming a headmaster, and then I would have my very own croquet team. Who will comfort me when I return home from work I hear you ask. Well, In spite of all my protestations of remaining a bachelor, I have a feeling that I will be married and be having children by then. I would probably have not more than two or three children. I shall probably have a couple of girls and a boy. I really am not in a position to say anything definite about the kind of woman I am going to marry. In an idealistic world I shall be married to a very quiet but intelligent woman who is very practical, efficient, understanding and realistic in her attitudes. The material comforts that I would enjoy will not make me lose my values. I will not be living in an artificial world of my own. My children would he my first responsibility and I would treasure the company of my friends and relatives.

Irony in Hunters in the Snow and How I Met My Husband Essays
Irony in Hunters in the Snow and How I Met My Husband Essays Irony in Hunters in the Snow and How I Met My Husband Paper Irony in Hunters in the Snow and How I Met My Husband Paper Irony in Tobias Wolffs Hunters in the Snow and Diane Munros How I Met My Husband Irony in Tobias Wolffââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Hunters in the Snowâ⬠and Alice Munroââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"How I Met My Husbandâ⬠Irony expresses and often underlines the contrast between two opposite concepts creating an indirect, more sophisticated method of communication. Irony is as efficient in a literary work, as the reader can perceive it. Therefore, often times the reader must carefully analyze the material, reading it repeatedly if necessary, in order to fully understand the authorââ¬â¢s message and intent. Tobias Wolff and Alice Munro employ irony in their short stories in attempt to surprise the readers, giving them an opportunity for discovery. In Wolffââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Hunters in the Snowâ⬠, irony acts as a tragicomedy agent, but its role is mainly to reveal the true nature of the protagonistsââ¬â¢ characters. On the other hand Munroââ¬â¢s use of irony gives her story, ââ¬Å"How I Met My Husbandâ⬠, a nice and funny finale, suggesting coming of age through epiphany and also the transition from phantasy to reality. Hence, irony is used differently in the two stories, such that in Wolffââ¬â¢s story it is a repetitive theme that keeps the reader engaged, while in Munroââ¬â¢s story irony provides the punch-line ending. In the short story, Hunters in The Snow, written by Tobias Wolff, the reader is presented with many elements of irony. The main characters of the story are three friends with personal issues that have a life-changing day in their lives. The three friends meet on a weekend to go deer hunting. It is the middle of the winter and the weather and environment they are in, which is upstate Washington state, is described as quite cold and inhospitable, which creates a slight discomfort in the reader. The author mentions that ââ¬Å"two years in a row theyââ¬â¢d been up and down this landâ⬠(87) in the same area they were heading. So one would think the three must know this area inside and out. At the end of the story though, they prove us otherwise: ââ¬Å"They had taken a different turn a long way backâ⬠(99). They get lost and do not even notice it, probably causing Kennyââ¬â¢s death. The connection between the fact that they know the area and that they lose their way anyway is not very apparent, yet I consider it one of the biggest situational ironies of the story, partly because it is the most tragic one. The main character seems to be Tub, an overweight man with an eating disorder, since he was presented first and also in most detail. Even though Tub is being overly cautious with his rifle by taking the bolt out before he enters the truck, which is not a common practice among hunters, he later shoots Kenny in a blink of an eye. The author mentions that Tub ââ¬Å"shot from the waistâ⬠(91), which means that this was an instinctive reflex in self-defense. The other two characters are Kenny, the prankster of the group and Frank, the intellectual of the group, who seems like the leader of the group in the beginning of the story. Both Kenny and Tub look up to Frank and show him what seems to be undeserved respect. As we find out later on he is clearly unworthy of the respect initially given to him. The irony of the situation is that Frank becomes quickly a subordinate of Tubs will. After Tub stands up to Frank and confronts him physically about the constant bullying, Frank instantly loses face and starts trying to please Tub in any way possible, completely ignoring the wounded Kenny. From being the leader of the group he becomes this puppy, doing everything he can to gain Tubââ¬â¢s approval, as his initial friendship to Kenny seems to have evaporated or never have truly existed. This situation is similar to an everyday occurrence in society of a person cheating on their spouse then eventually marrying the person they cheat with, yet it does not occur to that person they cheated with, that history might repeat itself. Tub accepts Frankââ¬â¢s apparent sensibility towards him instantly, without questioning his integrity and without realizing that he is most likely to become the next Kenny. In the beginning of the story Kenny puts Tubs life in danger by driving fast, halfway on the curb towards Tub. So one could say Kenny was playing with Tubs life. He then laughs uncontrollably at Tub ââ¬Å"slapping his knees and drumming his feet on the floorboardsâ⬠(86). And somehow this turns back against him, when he is the one shot by Tub later on in the story. When they stop to rest by the creek Kenny actually talks about choosing to be burned on the stake if ââ¬Å"you ask me how I want to die todayâ⬠(88), referring to the unpleasant cold weather they were having. This is yet another proof of Kennys ignorance towards the importance of life, and death for that matter. He is also presented as the best hunter in the group: ââ¬Å"this will be the first season since I was fifteen I havenââ¬â¢t got my deerâ⬠(90), so it is ironic that Kenny is the one that probably dies at the end, but somehow it is expected. He seems like a strong character in the beginning, by driving the truck, getting permission to hunt from the owner of the land and he is assigned to kill the dog. Yet, ironically, he becomes the weakest character in the story at the end. Alice Munros How I Met My Husband is an autobiographical short story that presents a decisive moment in the authorââ¬â¢s life. The main character is Edie, a ââ¬Å"hired girlâ⬠that works in the house of the wealthy Peebles family. Even though the author is omniscient she still attempts to hide some elements of the truth I wouldnt have looked in her drawers Thats a lie. I would have looked but I would have felt worse (128). The story is told in the first person, yet from the fifteen-year-old Edies point of view. In spite of the fact that she does not have to reveal anything that she does not want the reader to know, ironically, her guilt determines her to admit to it in a humorous way. This is an example of situational irony, where we do not expect to see a corrective remark addressing the authors true feelings and yet it happens. The irony occurs outside of the story though, making the presence of the author noticeable. The character of Alice Kelling seems to be the antagonist of the story, as we read the scene where the ladies find out that Edie knows about Chris Watters leaving. However, this is a quite common way for an author to shift the sympathy of the reader, by building a main character, making him or her familiar and then creating a highly controversial scene or situation, where no matter what the reader roots for the main character. Alice Kelling is actually a victim just like Edie, even though most readers will consider Alice Kelling the antagonist. After reflection it becomes clear to the reader that despite his friendly behavior the antagonist is actually Chris Watters. The clearest sign that he was doing something wrong would be his own epiphany: ââ¬Å"Oh, noâ⬠(136). In this case the irony occurs within the reader, a very interesting effect achieved by the author. Another ironic twist of the story occurs, as the reader realizes, that Edie married the mailman. She had waited by the mailbox for Chris Watters letter for months, and every time she saw the mailman she would smile. This of course confused the mailman, making him believe that he is the reason she was waiting at the mailbox every time. It is ironic and almost sad how the author lets the husband continue to believe that she ââ¬Å"went after him by sitting by the mailbox every dayâ⬠(140). Ironically, she does not even say the mailmanââ¬â¢s first name, as opposed to Chris Watters who is the only adult character addressed by the first name throughout the story, a clear sign of affection. And mostly ironic would be how the author describes the beginning of her relationship with her husband in no less than one paragraph. It almost suggests that the story could have been titled How I Fell in Love, But Then Married My Husband, which would take a whole lot of fun out of the ending. A sign of her admitting to giving up on love is the passage where she talks about the two kinds of women: the ones that wait and the ââ¬Å"busyâ⬠ones, that do not wait, referring to women who are looking for love and women that decide to just settle down. She then states that ââ¬Å"even though there might be things the second kind of women have to pass up and never know about, it still is betterâ⬠(140) , which shows she has no regrets about her decision. These two stories display irony in various ways. Tobias Wolff uses more graspable irony in ââ¬Å"Hunters in The Snowââ¬Å", which is very evident to the reader, while Alice Munro choses a more subtle way of being ironic in ââ¬Å"How I Met My Husbandâ⬠, but apparently both techniques are very effective in their own way. Also, another difference would be the amount of irony present in the two stories. Although not as effective as Munroââ¬â¢s usage of it Wolffââ¬â¢s story is abundant in irony which creates a constant entertainment for the reader. Munro chooses to make much less use of it, yet she still manages to create the surprise ending. When comparing the two stories one might consider Wolffââ¬â¢s story more interesting and maybe even more engaging, which could be considered slightly commercial. Munroââ¬â¢s story on the other hand requires more patience to read through, however, it might also offer more reason for contemplation. Brief History of the State of the Union Address
Brief History of the State of the Union Address The State of the Union address is a speech delivered annually by the President the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress. The State of the Union Address is not, however, delivered during the first year of a new presidentââ¬â¢s first term in office. In the address, the president typically reports on the general condition of the nation in the areas of domestic and foreign policy issues and outlines his or her legislative platform and national priorities. Delivery of the State of the Union address fulfills Article II, Sec. 3, of the U.S. Constitution requiring that ââ¬Å"The President shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.â⬠à As a policy of the doctrine of separation of powers, the Speaker of the House must invite the president to present the State of the Union Address in person. In lieu of an invitation, the address can be delivered to Congress in written form. Since January 8, 1790, when George Washington personally delivered the first annual message to Congress, presidents have from time to time, been doing just that in what has become known as the State of the Union Address. The speech was shared with the public only through newspapers until 1923 when President Calvin Coolidges annual message was broadcast on radio. Franklin D. Roosevelt first used the phrase State of the Union in 1935, and in 1947, Roosevelts successor Harry S. Truman became the first president to deliver a televised address. Extreme Security Required As the largest annual political event in Washington, D.C., the State of the Union Address requires extraordinary security measures, as the president, vice president, Cabinet members, Congress, Supreme Court, military leaders and diplomatic corps are all together at the same time. Declared a ââ¬Å"National Special Security Event,â⬠thousands of federal security personnel- including a number of military troops- are brought in to guard the area. The Great State of the Union Controversy of 2019 The question of when, where, and how the 2019 State of the Union Address would be delivered became a hot political mess on January 16, when during the longest federal government shutdown in history, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) asked President Trump to either delay his 2019 address or deliver it to Congress in writing. In doing so, Speaker Pelosi cited security concerns caused by the shutdown. ââ¬Å"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29,â⬠wrote Pelosi in a letter to the White House. However, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen stated that the Secret Service- then working without pay due to the shutdown- was fully prepared and willing to provide security during the address. ââ¬Å"The Department of Homeland Security and the US Secret Service are fully prepared to support and secure the State of the Union,â⬠she wrote in a tweet. The White House suggested that Pelosiââ¬â¢s action was actually a form of political retaliation for President Trumpââ¬â¢s reluctance to negotiate with the House on the its refusal to authorize $5.7 billion in funding requested by Trumpà for construction of the controversial Mexican border wall- the dispute that had triggered the government shutdown.à On January 17, President Trump responded telling Pelosi via a letter that her congressional delegationââ¬â¢s planned secret seven-day, secret ââ¬Å"excursionâ⬠to Brussels, Egypt and Afghanistan ââ¬Å"has been postponedâ⬠until the shutdown ended, unless she chose to travel using commercial aviation. Since the non-publicized trip included Afghanistan- an active war zone- travel had been arranged aboard a U.S. Air Force plane. Trump had earlier canceled his own upcoming trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, due to the shutdown. On January 23, President Trump turned down Speaker Pelosiââ¬â¢s request to delay his State of the Union Address. In a letter to Pelosi, Trump asserted his intention to deliver the address on Tuesday, January 29 in the House chamber as originally scheduled. ââ¬Å"I will be honoring your invitation, and fulfilling my Constitutional duty, to deliver important information to the people and Congress of the United States of America regarding the State of our Union,â⬠Trump wrote. ââ¬Å"I look forward to seeing you on the evening on January 29th in the Chamber of the House of Representatives,â⬠he continued, adding, ââ¬Å"It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!â⬠Speaker Pelosi has the option of blocking Trump by refusing to call a vote on the resolution required to formally invite the president to before a joint session of Congress in the House chamber. Lawmakers have not yet considered such a resolution, an action typically taken for granted.à Speaker Pelosi quickly returned this historic struggle of separation of powers back to where it started on January 16 by informing President Trump that she would not allow him to deliver his speech in the House chamber as long as the government shutdown continued. President Trump responded by indicating that he would announce plans for an alternative State of the Union address at a later date. A White House spokesperson suggested options including a speech from the Oval Office of the White House or at a Trump rally away from Washington. In a late night tweet on January 23, President Trump conceded to Speaker Pelosi, stating that he would delay his State of the Union Address until after the government shutdown had ended. ââ¬Å"As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address. I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative- I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over,â⬠Trump tweeted, adding, ââ¬Å"I look forward to giving a great State of the Union Address in the near future!â⬠The President continued that he would not seek an alternative location for the annual speech ââ¬Å"because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber.â⬠In a tweet of her own, Speaker Pelosi said she was hopeful that President Trumpââ¬â¢s concession meant that he would back a bill already before the House that would temporarily fund the federal agencies affected by the shutdown. On Friday January 25, President Trump reached an agreement with Democrats on a short-term spending bill that did not include any funding for the border wall but allowed the government to temporarily reopen until February 15. During the delay, negotiations over border wall funding were to continue, with President Trump stressing that unless funding for the wall was included in the final budget bill, he would either allow the government shutdown to resume or declare a national emergency allowing him to reallocate existing fund for the purpose. On Monday, January 28, with the shutdown at least temporarily ended, Speaker Pelosi invited President Trump to give his State of the Union address on February 5 in the House Chamber. ââ¬Å"When I wrote to you on January 23rd, I stated that we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has reopened to schedule this years State of the Union address,â⬠Pelosi stated in a letter provided by her office. ââ¬Å"Therefore, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a Joint Session of Congress on February 5, 2019 in the House Chamber.â⬠President Trump accepted Pelosiââ¬â¢s invitation a few hours later. The Address At Last President Trump finally delivered his second State of the Union address on February 5th in the House Chamber. In his 90-minute speech, the president sounded a tone of bipartisan unity, calling on Congress to ââ¬Å"reject the politics of revenge, resistance and retribution - and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise and the common good.â⬠Without mentioning the record 35-day government shutdown that had delayed the address, he told lawmakers he was ââ¬Å"ready to work with you to achieve historic breakthroughs for all Americansâ⬠and by working to ââ¬Å"govern not as two parties but as one nation.â⬠In addressing funding for his controversial border security wall that had caused the shutdown, the president came short of declaring a national emergency, but did insist he would ââ¬Å"get it built.â⬠Trump also stressed his administrationââ¬â¢s economic success, noting that ââ¬Å"no one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58 percent of the new jobs created in the last year.â⬠The president added, All Americans can be proud that we have more women in the workforce than ever before - and exactly one century after Congress passed the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, we also have more women serving in Congress than ever before.â⬠The statement brought a standing ovation and chants of ââ¬Å"USA!â⬠from female lawmakers, many of whom had been elected based on their platforms opposing the Trump administration. On foreign policy, Trump touted his efforts to denuclearize North Korea, claiming that ââ¬Å"if I had not been elected president of the United States we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea.â⬠He also revealed that he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a second summit on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam.à Washington Hit the Essentials Rather than outlining his administrations agenda for the nation, as has become the modern practice, Washington used that first State of the Union Address to focus on the very concept of the union of states that had so recently been created. Indeed, establishing and maintaining the union was the primary goal of Washingtons first administration. While the Constitution specifies no time, date, place, or frequency of the address, presidents have typically delivered the State of the Union Address in late January, soon after Congress has re-convened. Since Washingtons first address to Congress, the date, frequency, method of delivery and content have varied greatly from president to president. Jefferson Puts it in Writing Finding the whole process of a speech to a joint session of Congress a little too kingly, Thomas Jefferson chose to carry out his constitutional duty in 1801 by sending details of his national priorities in separate, written notes to the House and Senate. Finding the written report a great idea, Jeffersons successors in the White House followed suit and it would be 112 years before a president again spoke the State of the Union Address. Wilson Set the Modern Tradition In a controversial move at the time, President Woodrow Wilson revived the practice of spoken delivery of the State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress in 1913. Content of the State of the Union Address In modern times, the State of the Union Address serves as both a conversation between the president and Congress and, thanks to television, an opportunity for the president to promote his partys political agenda for the future. From time to time, the address has actually contained historically important information. In 1823, James Monroe explained what became known as the Monroe Doctrine, calling on powerful European nations to end their practice of western colonization.Abraham Lincoln told the nation he wanted to end slavery in 1862.In 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke of the four freedoms.Just four months after the 9-11 terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush shared his plans for a war on terror in 2002. Whatever its content, presidents traditionally hope their State of the Union Addresses will heal past political wounds, promote bipartisan unity in Congress and win support for his legislative agenda from both parties and the American people. From time to time... that actually happens.

Deregulation of energy Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Deregulation of energy - Research Paper Example Energy is necessary for carrying on our daily activities. Both individuals and businesses consume energy. Individuals use it at home in the form of gas for heating and electricity for lighting, providing power for the operation of washing machines, computers, televisions, radios, small appliances such as irons and blenders. Businesses use energy in some form to keep their operations going. However, manufacturing firms use energy to produce the goods they depend on in order to generate revenues. Oil and natural gas has been deregulated since the late 1970ââ¬â¢s (Horwitz 1990). While deregulating the industry may provide benefits it may have other less favorable consequences. This paper looks at the impact of deregulation of the energy industry on consumers, producers and United States economy. The null hypothesis is that deregulation of the energy industry has resulted in increased benefits for both consumers and producers but has resulted in increasing levels of imports and therefore a negative impact on the US trade balance. This study is significant since it will indicate how various levels of deregulation in the energy industry over the years have impacted the US and Canadian economies. This research will definitely help in directing policy changes in the future. Hammond and Knott (1986) while looking at deregulation in the financial industry indicated that although theories relating to regulation do not always focus on the same types of variables, researchers indicate that many of them reproduce the same effects ââ¬â once they have been initiated they are difficult to eliminate and it is almost inevitably leads to more regulation. However, Hammond and Knott (1986) indicate that these arguments do not support the trends since 1975 as there have been significant deregulations in almost every year. Deregulation in various industries such as telecommunications has

Question x 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Question x 2 - Essay Example In somewhat similar way, the same technology also permits unwarranted communications, especially copies of official communications mailed by insecure people, whether such copies are relevant to the mailed people or not. Not everyone indulges in faceless abuses on the Internet, and in a similar manner not everyone in a work environment is a coward. Most people realize the positive power of technology and harness it beneficially. It is a matter of behavior. People with emotional or issues need to be identified and appropriate methods devised to inculcate proper behavior. This may be in the form of counseling and training, especially with respect to expression of inner fears or venting out stress. This is best done by skillfully identifying the underlying causes and giving a chance to speak up, in private. i) Line functions are directly responsible for reaching organizational goals in terms of production or marketing that result directly bring in revenues. Staff managers are experts in their fields and advise line managers and hence are support functions (Line and staff functions, 2010). It is the hierarchical heads of the line functions that manage a business at the corporate level as well as at the functional head levels. ii) Internal customers do not generate revenues; only the external customers do. Hence, the latter are more important. Having said that, it is noted that internal customers create value and hence are important. For example, for the design engineer ( a staff function) the production manager and the marketing manager (both of which are line functions) are internal customers and the efficiency with which a design is created in terms of material use, processing and application will determine the production costs as well as customer satisfaction. iii) No. Creating a black box only enhances the employee apprehension and may even give rise to acts of settling personal
